South Carolina Adoption Laws
The Code of Laws of South Carolina describes the
adoption process in this state and covers many important procedural requirements and necessary safeguards to
insure the protection of the adoptive couple, the biological parents, and most
importantly, the child to be adopted. The section on Domestic Relations establishes fair and reasonable procedures
for the adoption of children and provides for the well-being of the adopted
child, with full recognition of the interdependent needs and interests of the
biological parents and the adoptive parents. However, when the interests of a
child and an adult are in conflict, the conflict must be resolved in favor of
the child. Children may be adopted by or placed for adoption with residents of
South Carolina only, except in unusual or exceptional circumstances.
This section of the South Carolina code of law is quite extensive, and
qualified legal counsel is advised for all parties involved in the adoption
process. Stephen Yacobi Law Firm can help both birth parents and adopting
parents understand the full range of responsibilities involved in the adoption
process, with the end result being a satisfying experience for everyone.
